Sadism and Masochism:
- Sadism occurs when one person gains sexual pleasure from inflicting pain upon, degrading or humiliating a voluntary participant.
- Masochism is the opposite side of the same coin. On this side, the person being bound, receiving pain, and being degraded or humiliated takes sexual pleasure in the receipt.
Sadomasochism is the conjoining of the two terms and is considered more accurate to describe the scene of BDSM, because ALL PARTICIPANTS must be voluntarily consenting and pleasure is taken from both sides.
There are theories on the psychology behind sadomasochism. They range from genetically inherent traits that are designed to pair powerful mates with submissive providers in somewhat of a mating dance. Some argue that only inherently violent individuals are drawn to the sadism, while “victims” are drawn to the masochism. I can speak from personal experience that some of the most kind and gentle people I know are some of the most fabulous and sexually rewarding dominants I have ever had the pleasure of serving. And, me…well, I am powerful and independent, but I sure do love the rewards of breaking those rules.
