The Responsibility to Stay Attractive

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding during college, and a couple of the other bridesmaids were all gossiping about the bride. Yes, they were saying that she was built to “blow up” once she settled in. What they meant was that our FRIEND was going to become obese after she settled into the marriage. (Side note: Those two were not my friends…relatives of the bride, childhood friends or something of the sort.) I keep up with my friends faithfully, and I am proud to report that she proved them all wrong. And, ironically, two of them are married and obese.

In thinking about this, I want to share with you my belief regarding health and appearance. I consider it my responsibility to stay healthy and attractive for my husband (for me, too!) Before you scoff, consider this:

How would you feel if you committed to a beautiful, healthy individual that stopped taking care of themselves? Maybe they gain 50 pounds for no medical reason. Maybe they take up a really bad habit, like smoking or drugs that degrade their health. I believe that this is a breaking of vows and trust. Essentially, it means two things:

1. They do not respect the relationship partner enough to ensure their own maximum longevity, and thus choose increase the possibility that they will leave their lover alone.

2. They are minimizing the factor of attraction and sexuality with their partner. These are essential elements of a truly happy marriage.

Note: The opinions shared above only relate to individuals who have the choice to avoid weight gain, illness, etc.

Go forth and be healthy.
